Anthropic commits $150M to the Genesis Mission to support federal AI research

Key Summary

Anthropic has committed $150 million to support the US government's Genesis Mission, a federal AI research initiative aiming to bring artificial intelligence into federal research. The funding will be used to provide researchers with access to Anthropic's Claude models, code, and API credits, strengthening collaboration on major scientific priorities such as fusion energy and quantum computing.

Introduction

Anthropic is putting $150 million behind the US government's biggest bet on AI-powered science. The company announced on October 8, 2026, that it will spend the money over three years supporting the Genesis Mission, the Department of Energy's push to bring artificial intelligence into federal research.

What the $150 million actually buys

Researchers get access to three main things: Claude models, Claude Code, and API credits. Each piece does a different job. Claude is the AI model itself. Claude Code is Anthropic's tool built for programming work. API credits let researchers plug Claude directly into their own software and workflows, instead of just chatting with it in a browser window.

The Genesis Mission

The pledge gives researchers at more than 15 federal agencies access to Anthropic's Claude models. That list includes NASA, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Anthropic says the goal is to strengthen collaboration on major scientific priorities. Two examples it highlighted are fusion energy and quantum computing.

The Announcement

Anthropic made the announcement at the Science: A New Golden Age Summit, held at the White House. The Department of Energy had news of its own that same day. It unveiled 12 new Phase II Genesis Mission project awards, totaling $159 million. Hundreds of Genesis Mission research projects are on the horizon, and the funding is expected to play a central role in pushing those efforts forward.

Background

The Genesis Mission was launched by executive order in November 2025 under the Trump administration, with the Department of Energy leading the effort. Dr. Darío Gil, the DOE's Under Secretary for Science, directs the initiative. Anthropic's relationship with the DOE predates this week's pledge. In December 2025, roughly a month after the executive order, the two began working together on a narrower goal: getting Claude to researchers at US national laboratories. This new commitment expands that original footprint considerably. The first phase focused on the national labs. The latest one reaches across more than 15 agencies, from space exploration at NASA to biomedical research at NIH.
