Foreclosure Activity on the Rise

Banks and other lenders are taking back far more American homes than they were a year ago. Lenders completed foreclosures on 5,794 US properties in August, a 42% jump from August of 2025 and a 22% rise from July, according to real estate data firm ATTOM. Texas accounted for 1,835 of those repossessions, more than three times the 589 recorded in California.

Regional Breakdown

North Carolina, Arizona, and Alabama followed with 356, 296, and 286 completed foreclosures respectively. Houston saw more bank repossessions than any other major metro area with 448, followed by Dallas with 402 and San Antonio with 256. In total, 40,277 properties nationwide received a foreclosure filing in August, including default notices, scheduled auctions, and bank repossessions. That figure is up 13% from a year earlier.

Nationwide Trends

Lenders started the foreclosure process on 25,894 homes during the month, 7% more than a year ago. South Carolina posted the worst foreclosure rate in the country, with one filing for every 1,547 housing units, followed by Nevada and Florida. ATTOM chief executive Rob Barber said, \
