Recent Market Developments

US spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $82.39 million in net outflows on October 16. Their Ethereum counterparts had no better luck, giving up $69.68 million the same day.

The October numbers Combined, the two product groups saw roughly $152 million leave in one session.

The bigger picture is the monthly tally. Bitcoin ETFs had run up roughly $535 million in net outflows for October through mid-month. That reverses September, when the funds pulled in about $2.6 billion of fresh money.

Bitcoin ETF trading volume topped $7.5 billion in the week ending October 16. Net selling over the past week came to only about $145 million.

Not every count of the day matched. Alternative tallies put Bitcoin’s daily outflow as low as $10.6 million, with Fidelity’s FBTC leading the redemptions. Reporting differences between data sources are common with ETF flows, which settle and get compiled on different schedules.

Market Sentiment and Outlook

Spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in the US in January 2024. Since then, cumulative net inflows have totaled roughly $57 billion.

Against that backdrop, October’s roughly $535 million in outflows amounts to less than 1% of everything that has flowed in since launch.

Bitcoin is trading near $82,000. Ethereum sits between $2,400 and $2,500.

Implications for Investors

More than $7.5 billion in weekly trading against about $145 million in net selling suggests engagement has not disappeared. It has turned cautious.

The simultaneous outflows from both Bitcoin and Ethereum funds point toward a broader risk-off posture rather than a view on one specific asset.

For Ethereum, with a much smaller asset base of approximately $15 billion, sustained outflows of this size would take a bigger proportional bite than equivalent dollar outflows from Bitcoin ETFs.

The spread between an $82.39 million outflow and a $10.6 million one is wide enough to change the tone of a day’s coverage. For anyone trading on flow data, knowing which source you rely on is half the battle.
