Charles Hoskinson pitches Night Mode as the next step beyond smart contracts at TOKEN2049

Key Summary

Charles Hoskinson, Cardano founder, presented Night Mode at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, a framework that combines zero-knowledge proofs, multi-party computation, and trusted execution on Midnight, a privacy-focused partner chain. Night Mode aims to support programmable smart contracts with selective disclosure, written in Compact programming language.

Introduction

Charles Hoskinson helped popularize smart contracts on Cardano. At TOKEN2049 in Singapore, he spent time criticizing them.

What is Night Mode?

The Cardano founder used the stage to promote what he calls the Night Frame, a framework that pairs zero-knowledge proofs, multi-party computation and trusted execution on Midnight, the privacy-focused partner chain built by Input Output Global (IOG).

Key Features of Night Mode

Night Mode uses the same trio of zero-knowledge proofs, trusted execution environments and multi-party computation. It is designed to support programmable smart contracts with selective disclosure, written in Midnight's Compact programming language.

Network and Tokens

The network runs on two tokens. NIGHT handles governance and utility and has a fixed supply of 24 billion. DUST is a shielded token that serves as a renewable resource for paying transaction fees.

Midterm Development

Midnight has also been rolling out upgrades to support permissionless smart contracts on mainnet, with that capability going live in early October 2026.

Cross-Chain Integration

The project is also reaching beyond Cardano. An integration with Solana wallets for private swaps has been announced as part of a broader cross-chain push.

Governance Tensions

The booth episode also points to a wider strain. The event exposed governance tensions inside the Cardano ecosystem, particularly between IOG and the Cardano Foundation.

Investor Exposure

For investors, the most direct exposure is NIGHT. The token has traded with notable volatility as Midnight updates have rolled out.

Long-Term Implications

The Solana wallet integration may be the more consequential detail long term. A privacy layer that only serves one ecosystem has a ceiling. One that plugs into other major chains could draw transaction volume from users who never touch Cardano at all.

Risks and Challenges

Combining three complex privacy technologies raises the engineering bar, and trusted execution environments add reliance on hardware rather than pure cryptography. Developers also have to learn Compact, which is a cost for any new language competing for attention.
