Overview

CoreWeave's unsecured bonds fell into distressed territory in mid-October 2026, trading below 80 cents on the dollar. For a company sitting on a contracted backlog of more than $100 billion, that is an awkward price tag. #

How bad did it get

CoreWeave's unsecured notes maturing in 2031 and 2032 changed hands at 76.5 to 81 cents on the dollar. Yields on those notes climbed to 15-16%.

The credit default swap market told a similar story. CDS spreads on CoreWeave hit record levels of 1,000-1,200 basis points, which implies roughly a 60% probability of default within five years. #

A CDS works like an insurance policy on a borrower's debt. One basis point is a hundredth of a percentage point, so a spread of 1,000 basis points means protecting the debt costs about 10% of its face value each year.

CoreWeave's stock took a notable hit alongside the bonds. High-profile voices including Elon Musk and Chamath Palihapitiya weighed in publicly, adding volume to the debate over whether AI-related private credit has been priced too generously.

A very large stack of debt

CoreWeave carries approximately $50 billion in total debt, with $35.6 billion in debt principal as of mid-2026.

AI, tech, and the markets they move— in one daily briefing.

#

Background: growth on credit

CoreWeave went public in March 2025 as a specialized cloud provider renting out GPU capacity to AI developers. By the end of the second quarter of 2026, it reported a backlog of around $104 billion.

Nvidia has also agreed to buy unsold CoreWeave capacity through April 2032. CoreWeave's heavy capital spending on data centers and chips has kept it unprofitable. #

What this means for AI financing

Carlyle has estimated that private credit could fund approximately $1 trillion of the AI compute buildout.

For investors, the near-term signals are fairly concrete. The first is whether CoreWeave can refinance or pay down the $4.4 billion due by the end of 2026 without punishing terms. The second is whether its bond prices and CDS spreads stabilize or keep widening.
