Google releases EmbeddingGemma 2, a 740 million parameter open-weight model under Apache 2.0

Key Summary

Google has released EmbeddingGemma 2, a 740 million parameter open-weight model that enables multimodal embeddings. The model ships under an Apache 2.0 license, allowing commercial use. It can handle text, images, video, and audio, and has a 4x larger context window than the original EmbeddingGemma.

Technical Highlights

EmbeddingGemma 2 is built on the Gemma 4 architecture and features a 270M-parameter backbone dedicated to text and code. The model accepts text, images, video, and audio, and places everything into a shared 768-dimensional vector space. It also maintains multilingual text handling across more than 100 languages.

Key Benefits

The model's context window is now 8K tokens, four times larger than the original EmbeddingGemma. This allows for more accurate matching of text queries to images, and linking any one modality to another. The model also features Matryoshka Representation Learning (MRL), which can cut embedding dimensions by up to six times.

Real-World Implications

The clearest beneficiaries of EmbeddingGemma 2 are developers building privacy-sensitive apps. By generating embeddings on the device, personal data such as photos, voice notes, and documents don't have to be uploaded to a server just to become searchable. The modular design also lowers the barrier to entry for developers and device makers.

Future Outlook

The model works with sentence-transformers, LiteRT/MediaPipe, transformers, MLX, and Ollama, and supports fine-tuning. The original EmbeddingGemma surpassed 20 million downloads, and the Apache 2.0 license permits commercial use. Google has made the model weights available immediately on Hugging Face and Kaggle.
