Zcash developers target January for quantum-resistant payments upgrade

Key Summary

Zcash developers aim to add post-quantum signature support to the network by January, aiming to protect payments from future quantum threats. The upgrade targets transparent transactions, which account for 70% of the total issued ZEC, while shielded transactions will require further work. This move comes after Ethereum researcher Justin Drake raised concerns about AI-accelerated threats to elliptic-curve cryptography.

Zcash to Upgrade for Quantum-Resistant Payments by January

Introduction

Zcash developers have set January as the goal for adding post-quantum signature support to the network. The aim is to protect payments from a future in which today's cryptography stops holding up.

What the Zakura team is building

The work comes from the Zakura node software team. Its target is a set of post-quantum signature opcodes that support hash-based signatures. Hash-based signatures matter because they rely on a different mathematical foundation than the elliptic-curve cryptography most blockchains use today. The idea is to give users a signing method that does not depend on the math quantum machines are expected to threaten.

Transparent transactions

The first phase covers transparent transactions. These are Zcash's public payments, which work much like Bitcoin transactions, with sender, receiver and amount visible on chain. That focus is a numbers decision. Transparent transactions account for approximately 70% of the total issued ZEC, which makes them the largest exposed surface on the network.

Market impact and roadmap

The push picked up urgency after Ethereum researcher Justin Drake raised alarms about AI-accelerated threats to elliptic-curve cryptography. His 'bunker mode' warning framed AI and quantum computing as risks that could arrive faster than the industry expects. Markets took the message seriously. ZEC fell approximately 11% in the aftermath. Zcash is not starting from scratch. The NU6.3 upgrade in July 2026 introduced quantum-recoverable notes, known as Ironwood notes, which have been active since then. Separately, Shielded Labs launched the Epoch project on October 1, 2026. Its goal is production-ready post-quantum cryptography by the end of 2027, and it builds on the groundwork laid in NU6.3.

What this means for ZEC holders and the wider market

For holders, the most practical takeaway concerns which coins get protection first. With approximately 70% of issued ZEC sitting in transparent form, the January target addresses the bulk of supply before it reaches the privacy pool. That sequencing could matter for anyone who keeps funds in transparent addresses for exchange or custody reasons. Those users may get access to post-quantum signing options sooner than shielded users, assuming the upgrade activates as hoped. The missing activation date is the main thing to watch. A development target can slip, and network upgrades usually require testing, review and coordination across node operators before they go live. If Zcash ships post-quantum signatures for transparent payments on schedule, it would be among the more visible networks to put this kind of protection into production. The shielded side requires additional engineering, and Epoch's own target of late 2027 suggests the full transition is a multi-year effort rather than a single upgrade.
